It was May 2008, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. We had decided on an early family vacation that year. I remember sitting in the condo playing around on my “Myspace.” My friend Ashlie had joined the Shoemake family for a little R&R. I remember looking over at her laptop and asking, “What are you doing?” To which she replied, “Playing around on Facebook.” My response? “What is that?”
Now let’s stop right there and let me say this: I’m a slow bloomer when it comes to techy things. A great example: I still don’t own an iPod. Facebook came out in 2004. When did I finally hear about it and create an account? 2008. Sad, I know.
Anyways, I remember creating an account and thinking, “Gosh, this is too hard. I’ll NEVER learn how to use it.” And it took me awhile. I created the account, got aggravated trying to figure it out and went back to faithful old Myspace. But eventually, I came around and became “Facebook Savy.”
This past weekend, the girls ventured out to see The Social Network, which also included a trip to Gigi’s for cupcakes, the BlueGrass Festival in downtown Chatt, and the Mellow Mushroom for “special pizza,” as Lindy likes to call it. Overall, I really liked the movie, even though I left it mentally exhausted. It was definitely an intense movie. And if it is even remotely an accurate portrayal of Mark Zuckerberg, does the man’s mind EVER rest????
As with most things, I figured Facebook would be a fading trend. I’ve quite often wondered what would take its place. And surprisingly, nothing has yet. If you would have asked me two years ago if I thought Facebook would be such an integral part of everyday life, I would have said no. But I am amazed at just how much it is. For instance, at lunch yesterday, I was asked if I had heard about “so and so” and “such and such.” To which I responded, “Yea, I saw something about that on Facebook.” And how many times do we get told about somebody or meet somebody and immediately search for them on Facebook to find out about them or see what they look like? Guilty as charged. Does a day go by where we don’t check our Facebook once, twice, even 3874837 times a day? Most of us even have the Facebook application on our cell phones. Immediate access to Facebook while away from our computers.
Facebook definitely does bring it aggrevations, challenges, addiction and drama. I can’t even count the number of times I’ve wanted to delete my account or had to take a Facebook hiatus. And then there’s my mother, who I like to call my “Facebook Monitor.” I would have NEVER thought in a million years that my mom would be a “Facebooker.” I remember in the beginning months of her having an account, I would get countless calls asking “Why did you say that on Facebook? I think you should take that down. Why did you post that picture?” Gotta lover her 🙂
But overall, I’m quite grateful for Facebook. It has allowed me to keep in touch with friends and family, especially my mom, and keep them as part of my everyday life. Furthermore, it has helped me to reconnect with people from years ago, who I would probably not have reconnected with otherwise.
So way to go Mark Zuckerberg! Job well done. Your personality and people skills could use ALOT of work, but you are quite the genius. And if you are ever looking to give away some of your $6.9 billion dollars, please look my way.
